Abstract

The present text presents an approach to the key determinants of the original concept of Latin American populism; On that basis it discusses the pertinence of its application in the present time. Based on the cases of Mexico and Ecuador and their management of oil resources, the article proposes the
Concept of "oil populism" as a subcategory of the classical concept. Finally, the way in which the oil policies of both countries have unleashed complex relations with the popular sectors, where the adhesion is far from being the distinguishing mark or of fragile accommodations, while its participation in the national policy - when it happens - rather than subordinate, tends to be conjunctural.
