Scale and participation: How important is size for democracy?
Abstract
This article is part of the current theoretical discussion on the relationship of democracy to the scale of citizen’s participation. Contrary to the frequent idealization of the local level as the privileged setting for democratic participation, we argue that democracy is not doomed to local constraint. Both scale and participation are conceptually approached beyond the physical dimensions of particular institutional settings. Our main conclusión assesses that the larger/higher the scale, the highest quality and politicization of participatory democracy is reached.
