Mutation and weakening of progressiveness: from the social left to the cultural left
Abstract
The article discusses the current mutations in the Left
and the subsequent weakening of its more radical, tradi
tional, focus on capitalism and democracy in terms of class
conflicts, social emancipation and collective well-being.
Moving toward more individualist approaches, this new
emphasis is addressed at building subjective or individu
alistic identities to the detriment of collective solidarity,
thus objectively reinvigorating the conventional ideologi
cal tenets of neoliberal capitalism, which in turn explains
the re-emergence of right wing electoral forces in a number
of countries across the world.
