The state, inequality and welfare in Argentina (1993-2010)
Abstract
The overall purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of state intervention on income distribution and welfare in Argentina’s recent years, providing empirical support, from inequality studies field, for evaluating continuities and changes in the role of the state. The study of redistributive bias derived from state action, founded on a theoretically informed state characterization as proposed in this paper, constitutes a relevant empirical input to address problems such as the relative autonomy of the state, which tends to be addressed exclusively by theoretical means. Certainly state functions surpass the complex redistributive mechanism which it operates. Yet this aspect of public action provides enough evidence for reporting the meaning of its main orientations.
