Keywords: Symptomatic Reading, Film Analysis, Film Theory, Semiotics, Context

Abstract

This article reviews the evolution of the concept of symptomatic reading in film analysis, with the aim of reconstructing the term and defining a model for its application. Drawing on the most representative proposals of this trend since the early twentieth century, the study addresses historical agreements and controversies in the form of a state of the question. Finally, from the coordinates of semiotics, it offers a theoretical reconstruction of the idea and discusses a pathway for its exercise, based on key methodological approaches.
