We present here the articles accepted for the call "Consumption of psychoactive substances: from punishment to care," which brought together studies contributing knowledge and actions that counter the punitivism that persists in our societies. The selected contributions come from Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia. As the editorial mentions, "although the consumption of psychoactive substances is a practice that dates back to the earliest days of humanity, in the last century it has become an issue that has gained attention from the scientific community, State agencies of control, professionals in a number of diverse settings, and society at large. Despite being a complex issue with multiple manifestations, there has been a tendency to reduce it to a question of disease or of crime; nonetheless, not all forms of consumption constitute problematic substance use, nor do they produce substance use disorders.”
We acknowledge the coordination carried out by Graciela Touzé (president of Intercambios Asociación Civil, Argentina), and Telmo Mota Ronzani (professor of the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil) as guest editors, as well as the invaluable work carried out by the reviewers that is so crucial to putting into circulation relevant research within this thematic area. We also thank the authors for their active participation in the revision and editing of their texts and above all for choosing Salud Colectiva as the distribution channel for their work.
